Setting the stage in Open Cloud

In this opening talk we take the open source practitioner's perspective to look at policy issues raised by a key question in the value chain of open source cloud software innovation: will the code be successful? From its beginnings of landmark projects developed by individuals, open source software has evolved into a support mechanism for innovations carried out by ecosystems of companies and research organizations working together in collaborative projects. We will look at several open source cloud-oriented collaborative projects including some from the European Open Cloud Directory and see how, while these innovative ecosystems create breakthrough technologies, they do not aim at delivering market-ready products. These projects confront us with what we call the Delivery Challenge of open source innovation: i.e. how to guarantee the operational quality of these innovations, how to turn these innovations into competitive offerings. While large users are quickly getting familiar with cloud technologies, offering the benefits of the cloud to SMEs is still a necessary evolution. This market will be ripped by a, emerging breed of service vendors with packaged mature offerings helping SMEs make the best out of their own infrastructure and the heterogenous cloud ecosystem.

OpenCloudware: The vApp Lifecycle Management Solution for Multi-Cloud

The main way to “go cloud” has proved to be, for security and economic reasons, hybrid : mixing private with public. Moving to Cloud PaaS is then requires to: manage the lifecycle of applications over different cloud providers; mask the heterogeneity; automate the deployment whatever the application technology and execution environment are, etc. This is what tackles OpenCloudware, which aims at enabling flexible multi-cloud applications thanks to a full automated think-build-run chain.

In the presentation we present a sample from OpenCloudware results demonstrating in particular a complete mechanism, comprising: application selection, deployment, benchmarking. OpenCloudware supports many IaaS infrasctructures, including OpenStack (via OW2stack). OpenCloudware is supported by the French administration through its IT support program "Fond National pour la Société Numérique".

XLCloud: 3D rendering in the cloud

The XLcloud project strives to establish the demonstration of a High Performance Cloud Computing (HPCC) platform based on OpenStack that is designed to run a representative set of compute intensive workloads. Two Use Cases will be demonstrated during this presentation. First, the interventional radiology use case of the XLCloud project has the goal to show that the XLCLoud platform can be used to leverage an application requiring both interaction and high performance computing. This simulator, developed by CEA and Esprimed, allows medical staff to prepare or replay an intervention in a 3D interactive environment (manipulation of the radiological system, position of people and their protections) while having the benefit of precise estimation of the dose they are exposed to through a 3D monte carlo simulation optimized in order to provide results in interactive time. The second use case will be based on cloud gaming and 3D visualization. XLcloud is a three-year long collaborative project funded by the French FSN (Fonds national pour la Société Numérique) programme.

RISCOSS Convention

Abstract: RISCOSS develops a risk management-based methodology and a platform to facilitate the adoption of open source code into mainstream products and services. During this second RISCOSS convention, Xavier Franch (Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya) and Angelo Susi (Fondazione Bruno Kessler) will present the ongoing efforts on data models and planned algorithms. External members will contribute to deliver a clear picture on the impacts on corporate and industrial information systems. A first Proof of Concept of the RISCOSS platform will be demonstrated. Then, an open discussion with experts will highlight next collaboration opportunities. Public and free workshop, access with registration. RISCOSS is a publicly funded project part of the FP7 Programme of the European Commission. It started in November 2012 and will end in October 2015

erOCCI, a scalable, model-based REST API framework

While REST architecture has been widely adopted for web services, the lack of standard formalism for their description prevents from implementations interoperability. The erocci framework, based on erlang/OTP platform, implements the OCCI specification for building interoperable, self-documented web services. Building a scalable web service is as simple as describing your application model in an XML document and choosing amongst existing data backend. It can be extended in various ways to adapt to data sources (database, 3rd party web services, DBUS APIs, etc.), protocols (HTTP, XMPP, etc.), authentication mechanisms, etc.

Industrializing Machine Image Creation for Cloud Environments

Agility and automation are key factors into today’s cloud era. It has never been easier to provision new instances on-demand with a few command lines. However, the actual machine images used to provision these instances, are typically still created and maintained by hand. To fully harness the cloud, organizations need to automate software and application onboarding. This presentation will explore how you can use the open-source Hammr command-line tool to automate machine image creation for cloud environments, including OpenStack, CloudStack and many more, from a single configuration file. You can also migrate workloads to cloud, and automate your end-to-end software development processes by integrating Hammr as part of your DevOps tool chain to easily build machine images then deploy and maintain your live running instances. This is a practical presentation with examples and live demo. UShareSoft will be submitting Hammr to OW2.

Managing risks in OSS adoption: the RISCOSS approach

This presentation will report on the progresses of the RISCOSS methods and software. Supported by the FP7 program, RISCOSS develops a risk management-based methodology to facilitate the adoption of open source code into mainstream products and services. Using advanced software engineering techniques and risk management methodologies, RISCOSS develops innovative tools and methods to identify, manage and mitigate risks of integrating third-party open source software. RISCOSS not only enables users to collect informed intelligence on open source components, but goes one step further by offering risk analysies that adapts to individual business situations. Free Software/Open Source code is by definition Free, but writing it requires heavy competencies. There are many ways (Business Models) to finance these developments. Some of them include mixing Open Source code with Proprietary code. Regularly developers that started with Open Source, move to proprietary or Open Core business models. Based on 10 years of experience in producing Open Source Code with the company XWiki SAS, and on analysis on how other companies have evolved their business models and how it impacted their open source contributions, this talk proposes to review these methods in the light of the sustainable financing of Open Source Code: in which ways can one write FLOSS code for the long term. What are good practices from all participants to the FLOSS eco-system which can lead to more Open Source code production and better Open Source products.

The Big Challenge of Big Data and Hadoop Integration

Enterprises can't close their doors just because integration tools won't cope with the volume of information that their systems produce. As each day goes by, their information will become larger and more complicated, and enterprises must constantly struggle to manage the integration of dozens (or hundreds) of systems. Apache Hadoop has quickly become the technology of choice for enterprises that need to perform complex analysis of petabytes of data, but few are aware of its potential to handle large-scale integration work. By using effective tools, integrators can process the complex transformation, synchronization, and orchestration tasks required in a high-performance, low cost, infinitely scalable way. In this talk, Cédric Carbone will discuss how Hadoop can be used to integrate disparate systems and services, and provide a demonstration of the process for designing and deploying common integration tasks.

WebLab in the land of Big Data

Big data and mass analytical processing have gained a prime position over the past years in business and have touched almost all domains of society. According to the famous Gartner “3Vs” definition, big data deals with Volume, Velocity and Variety. It enables organizations to exploit information that was previously ignored because there was no reasonable way to process it. One talks about the big data revolution but underpinning this revolution is the capacity to process unstructured data such as written documents, images, audio and videos which make up more than 80 percent of available data today. The WebLab platform aims at building systems providing intelligence solutions from the processing of open source data. Such systems face three major challenges: • Managing large amounts of unstructured data, • Managing the data diversity with the appropriate combination of processing tools , • Allowing the most effective tools to be selected for each processing step. Like Big Data, WebLab addresses intelligence needs and deals with Volume, Variety and Velocity. Can we therefore say that Big Data and WebLab face the same challenges? In fact, it can be argued that Big Data and WebLab are complementary. How can we benefit, then, from the best of both worlds?

This presentation will provide you with feedback we have on building Component Oriented Application with Javascript. The pros of using Nanoko will lead you through the success of developing our own B2B catalog, Djinlinne, and the cons to develop Javascript client side application will provide you the roadmap of Nanoko for the coming year. Nanoko is a factory to develop and re-use code through your applications. Nanoko allows you to re-use your code and to use the same code for you website and native application. Based on Maven and OSGI principles to link components, Nanoko is a huge improvement for development times and costs. Without restraining your choices of libraries and frameworks, Nanoko allow you to develop a component once, like a login component, and re-use it though all you apps, web apps and hybrid apps. Real-time product design review on the web

The web standard technologies have evolved quickly the last few years and hence have opened a brand new range of features which were impossible before. If we had to choose the two standards that will have the biggest impact in the coming years we would probably select WebGL which brings true 3D capabilities to the browser and Web Sockets which offers full duplex communication with the server. During this session, I will not only tell how WebGL can help product manufacturers to work more efficiently or how Web Sockets can be leveraged to implement user to user communication, I will mainly explain how we can smartly mix the two together. Actually, this is what we did within our open source PLM platform. By combining both WebGL and Web Sockets API we were able to enhance our web digital mock-up viewer with real-time collaboration features that enable users to perform product models co-reviews across the web.

A talk about real time wysiwyg editor

Traditional realtime collaborative editors such as etherpad and google docs use Operational Transformation algorithms which require a central server to resolve divergences when multiple clients alter the same part of the document. These algorithms require the server and client to run the same algorithm often forcing implementers to choose suboptimal designs to avoid duplicating the client and server implementations. Here we present a consensus-finding algorithm based on the Bitcoin Blockchain and a working implementation in a realtime collaborative editor with all algorithmic logic on the client side. We further explore use of encryption to prevent the server from reading the content it stores and adaptations of the algorithm for WYSIWYG editing.

LemonLDAP::NG 1.4 new features

LemonLDAP::NG is a Free Software dédicated to SSO and access control, used in numerous french administrations and other organizations. Lutece was originally a Java CMS realized by the City of Paris for its own purpose in 2001 and has been distributed as Free Software since 2002. Automating OW2 SQuAT Assessment and Reporting using Worklow and Metrics Collection Tools

Ensuring the sustainability of Open Source projects is important, especially when organized in ecosystems of interrelated projects. Generic methodologies like SQALE or QualOSS describe how to assess maturity covering product, process and community aspects. Specific ecosystems have defined their own quality model, like OW2’s SQUaT Mature Transition Checklist. Such quality assessment of Open Source Ecosystems should be efficiently supported. In this talk we will present the CHOOSE toolset we have developed to help in automating and uniformly managing the quality of a whole Open Source Ecosystems. Our toolset is based on 35 key indicators related to maintainability, reliability and community which are used to implement and automate the production of OW2’s Mature Transition Checklist. The generic architecture of the toolset will be presented how it is instantiated to implement the OW2 Mature Transition Checklist and to efficiently interface with the OW2 forge. The toolset implementation will also be detailed stressing the use of Open Source components for the workflows' orchestration (Bonita), project/code analysis tools (HtmlUnit, QualOSS) and automatic report generation tools (JasperReports). Finally, a validation on a subset of 21 OW2 projects with an in-depth focus on a few projects (Chameleon, Spago and Orchestra) to produce maturity reports.

OpenPaaS, the open source collaboration platform

This talk will introduce the OpenPaaS project to the OW2 community. OpenPaaS is a new Open Source software, provided by Linagora. It aim to bring a complete solution for social and collaborative work inside enterprises and organizations. The software brings an Enterprise Social Network, based on open collaboration REST API, comes with an App Store for organizations to share software, and offers innovative services built over on the edge standards and technologies, such as WebRTC. Here we will present the software architecture, the underlying technologies, give the status of current development, and the roadmap of the project for the year to come. The ultimate goal of this talk is to get early feedback from the community about the project and its direction.
